Assessing

The Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) exams are administered once per year to elementary students in grades three, four and five in the subjects of English Language Arts and Mathematics. Students in grade four also take a PSSA test in Science. These assessments are aligned to the PA Core Academic standards and help Pennsylvania and the district to meet federal and state requirements. They are designed to serve as one data point to indicate how students, schools and school districts are progressing on those standards to parents, educators, policymakers and other stakeholders.

PSSAs are administered during the spring according to a testing schedule set by the Department of Education. More information about PSSAs can be found at this link to the Pennsylvania Department of Education website:

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments are given to students in grades one through five in the fall, winter and spring of each school year. Kindergarteners take MAP assessments twice, in the winter and spring. These assessments are designed to measure a child’s progress or growth in school. These assessments are adaptive, meaning that question difficulty is based upon the results of previous answers.

MAP was developed by the Northwest Education Association (NWEA), a not for profit educational service organization with over 30 years in assessment development and research. More information about MAP can be found at this link:

AIMSWeb is a web-based solution for universal screening, progress monitoring, and data management for Grades K-12. AIMSWeb provides guidance to administrators and teachers based on accurate, continuous, and direct student assessment.

AIMSWebPlus is a nationally normed assessment that identifies progress on specific skills in Reading and Mathematics. Mt. Lebanon School District uses AIMSWebPlus as a universal screener to identify strengths and challenges for each student.  We use this data source in combination with other assessments to design targeted instruction and ascertain intervention needs.

AIMSWebPlus is administered to all students three times per year as a screener. It is also used as a Progress Monitoring measure for students receiving additional supports to measure the impact of interventions or additional instruction.

AIMSWebPlus provides teachers with continuous student performance data that helps them individualize instruction to better meet the needs of each student. AIMSWebPlus allows us to track how well students are performing on specified skills in comparison to their peers using national normative data.

AIMSWebPlus is one data source that school teams use to make instructional decisions, provide additional supports and monitor student progress within our multi-tiered system of supports that each of our schools utilizes in order to meet the academic, behavioral and social/emotional needs of all of our students.  

Periodically, teachers will provide AIMSWebPlus reports which articulate your student’s respective scores and patterns of growth. After reviewing the results, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
